Leesville Lake, Zoo & Such

Well, I better do some catch-up, because there's a boy who's about to have a seventh birthday soon, and I'm gonna post a big thing about that. So...

The kids all got some one-on-one time at the cabin, Henry got a new bike, I took the kids to the zoo,

End of July

Lincoln is learning to swim with the help of private lessons. We've learned a few things about swim lessons. First, we started him too soon. Lesson learned, and will be applied to the little ones. Second, private and frequent lessons help out a ton. Weekly lessons with multiple kids where he gets about 10 total minutes in the pool is just insufficient. He worked by himself with a new teacher today and Jenn said he was treading water and swimming across the pool. He'll be ready for the Animal Kingdom pool in October!

I got an iPhone not too long ago. I've been so hesitant to use it to it's full potential because I'm not crazy about paying much for data plans, but it's both fun socially (I like Foursquare and I just got on Instagram), I can now leave the Stone Age from a texting standpoint, I love the Map My Run app for running, and the thought of using it for a variety of helpful reasons when we're at Disney World was interesting. Only recently have I found out just how little data I use for what I enjoy, and my concern with consuming a bunch of data on it at Disney has been alleviated by learning that there is WiFi just about everywhere we'll be. Some areas of technology make me feel cutting edge, but smart phones and my extreme tardiness to the party make me feel outdated.

Anyway, here's my Instagram stuff...

Lincoln's pretty good now with his bike.

The kids are becoming much more tolerant of longer walks as we prep them for Disney.

Henry, while playing with Lincoln and Lydia, bumped his head on the latch part of Lincoln's door.

Henry has also been showing a lot more interest in Duplos lately.
Lincoln's imaginative play is rubbing off on both Henry and Lydia, allowing them to play better together. This has been a welcome change for Jenn.

She Runs, He Bikes

Untitled
It's been business as usual since we've been home from vacation. At least as far as my photographing the kids is concerned. This week they've been at Vacation Bible Camp at church, and Lincoln's been digging that. The two little ones have been doing well, too, and Jenn's been corralling 4th graders. While they can tend to drive one crazy, they've endeared themselves to her enough that she's taking cake pops for them tomorrow to celebrate one of the boy's birthday. #notsurprised

Last weekend we went down to the beaver pond so Jenn could get a long run in. Lincoln rode his bike with her for a bit of it, and I kept up with the kids in the meantime. It was a lot of fun watching the wildlife, and even the train!

The kids have been into puzzles lately. Lydia will stick any two pieces together that remotely may fit, regardless of the pictures on them. Henry isn't much different. Lincoln, on the other hand, is really getting and he finished this one with little help from mom and dad.

Hair Cut!

Blogging has been difficult lately.

For starters, I've been really busy with Grandpa Doug and the rest of the Gates/Hopwood gang taking off for Stony Lake this week. We at the Clinic went months without seeing a foreign body surgery case, and even longer without seeing one that needed cut after hours, but guess what happened on Monday? That's right. Goldendoodle. Underwear. Ileum. I love those surgeries, but it made for a long day.

I couldn't believe my ears, though, when I got home and learned that Jenn had taken all three kids to The Ledges in the afternoon, and that... wait for it... they were all very good throughout the day. GASP!!! Amazing!

It's good to have those times, because the tougher times are taxing. Henry is a different boy around me compared with how he is around Jenn. His relationship with her hasn't changed much since the beginning. He's been attached to her from the beginning and she's often his preference. He's more comfortable in general, but he still saves his "very needy" moments for Jenn. When she's playing mom to a four year old and two toddlers, more neediness is tough.
Henry got his first haircut today, and he exceeded my expectations. He sat on my lap, sucked his fingers for only a short time, and didn't cry. Here's the do...
Henry's adjustment overall to this point has been very good. He's learning (emphasis on learning) to eat with a spoon. We're still working on the fork. I can't get him out of the bath tub now, and he pours water on his own face. He is helpful with getting dressed. This morning was the first time I picked him up out of his crib and had him lean against me in hug-like fashion. He was great with the big crowd last Friday of Gates-Gates-Hopwoods, even showing some personality at the dinner table. He's showing good comfort with wrestling behavior with Lincoln and Lydia. He's enjoying the sandbox. He's not fussing and crying when he sees us approach the pantry on a consistent basis. He's sucking on his fingers less during the day. He's interactinve in the car.

Lincoln continues to be a good big brother to Henry. In fact, at bedtime this evening, I said, "Lincoln, you're being a very, very good big brother to Henry. The only times you had any slip-ups today were with Lydia. If you would treat Lydia like you treat Henry, your days would be FANTASTIC!" To which he replied, "I'm nicer to Henry because I like Henry better than Lydia." Oy. I responded, "You still need to behave like a good big brother to Lydia, and I know by watching how you are with Henry that you know how to be a good big brother." This is probably only a foreshadowing of things to come.

There are still some instances where Henry wants us to behave in a certain way or do a certain thing and if we don't do it on his time schedule (like right *now*, he gets upset. Sounds like a 19-month-old to me! Here's the anatomy of a cry. What's going on here is this: he enjoys pushing Lydia's borrowed (thanks Uckers!) tricycle around, and every now and then he wants to sit on it, but he can't yet climb on it himself. His metamorphosis of facial expressions speaks for itself...

For those who have remembered us in their prayers, we are grateful. I'm not sure how families, particularly families with toddlers (plural), get through these times without supernatural intervention. We certainly need and are continually seeking the LORD's presence on a daily basis.

First Family Bike Ride of 2010

We all went for a bike ride today. You may recall our last bike ride in Ohio.
June '09
June of last year gave us an unpleasant morning on our bikes and Lincoln was not into riding. This afternoon was different and Lincoln was greatly anticipating the ride. He wanted to help put the bikes on the car, put the bikes together when we got to the trail, and wanted to hold the wheels while Jenn and I actually put them together. Surprisingly, he didn't fuss about his helmet. With only one exception recently, he hasn't been too into wearing hats. But he knew that Daddy and Mommy also had to wear helmets, so he was okay with it.
We rode on the Towpath and passed Szlay's cornfields. Lincoln (and Daddy) were excited to see the big John Deere tractors out plowing the field. Lincoln pointed out that Szlay's (he says that name pretty well) big John Deere tractors plow the fields and Daddy's little John Deeres mow lawns. Insightful little guy.
And we also saw the Grey Goose. For those of you reading this who like to walk over the beaver dam know about the resident Grey Goose. He was quiet today, and quite tolerant of the Canadian Geese around him.
Another good family day had by the Gateses.

On another note, check out what Emily has to say about the Nashville Flood.

A Family Day

Today started with a bike ride on the Towpath through Peninsula. This is one of my favorite stretches of the Towpath, but Lincoln wasn't too into the bike riding today. He's been agreeable in the past, but I think he was hungry and tired for the majority of the ride, and he wasn't very happy.

He did give us a decent picture with his helment on...

After he ate some breakfast and took a bit of a nap, we had a fun rest of the day. I occupied him doing various things, like throwing his toys into the bathtub (a recent favorite), climbing the stairs a half-a-dozen times, and taking a stroll around the back yard... all while Jenn and I got lots of little things done around the house. It was a good Saturday at the Gates Home.

The blogging has been slow lately because I've been in the middle of a long book (Atlas Shrugged... comments to come). Once I'm through, I hope to do a bit more photo-taking and blogging.

One more thing: After I changed a particularly stinky diaper, one that needed to go straight to the trash can in the garage, I said to Jenn as I passed her in the kitchen, "There was as much poop as you'd think." (Lincoln had eaten a very large breakfast this morning.) Then Lincoln, while sitting on my arm, repeated, "Poo." I got a chuckle out of that one.
