New River Gorge

Time to play catch-up. I'm gonna break our recent travels up into two posts.

First, the second to last weekend in June, the kids spent in Columbus with Grandma Laura & Grandpa Dave. A number of weeks prior, they called and asked if they could have the kids for a long weekend to go kayaking, swimming, etc.

Jenn and I said, "Um. Okay."

And then we set about planning a weekend for ourselves 'cause we didn't want to spend it just at home. We settled on the New River Gorge and Fayetteville, West Virginia. Wow, was it a cool weekend.

Jenn drove the kids down on Friday afternoon, I left after work and picked up Jenn, and we made it to the Country River Inn in Fayetteville right around midnight. Rick was a fantastic host, he built the place himself (renovating an old school building!), and he and his wife prepared some good breakfasts for us. Honestly, we liked the Country River in better than Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The first day, Saturday, we hiked a number of trails around the gorge. It rained pretty hard on us during our second hike, but otherwise we had great weather. Sunday we rafted the Lower New River. Jenn won't do that again, but I had a good time. :)

The restaurants in Fayetteville were surprisingly really, really good, and it was the most gluten-free friendly place we'd ever been. Seriously. Places like the Secret Sandwich Society and Pies & Pints (the original that has now expanded) were clever, unique stops for really good dinners.

After a short hike on Monday with a GREAT view, we headed back for Columbus. Jenn and I really enjoy these types of trips, and if you're looking for something good for your marriage, take one of these yourselves.
